BRINGING THE ROOM TOGETHER WITH RUGS!

Statement rugs can add life to any room.

Statement rugs can add life to any room.

Let’s talk rugs.

Rugs are the unspoken heroes of our living spaces. They may seem comparatively insignificant in the grand scheme of interior decorating, but their powers of style and influence over a room should never be underestimated. The correct rug can bring the whole space together -- the perfect rug does that and more. This week, I’d like to share with you some of my favorite rug tips. Who knows, some rug-revamping may be just what your space needs!

First and foremost, size matters when it comes to finding the most complementary rug. Rug size is often an area where homeowners make mistakes. Let’s start with a living-room space. The rule of thumb here is to make sure to leave at least 18 inches of edge space, like a frame around the furniture. I know that rugs can be expensive, but don't skimp on the size. A larger rug will make your room look bigger. At the very least, be sure that the front feet of your furniture are sitting on the rug, if not the whole piece of furniture.

Rugs can (and should!) also be added to personal spaces, like your bedroom. You will probably want to choose the size of your rug based on the size of your bed. In a bedroom with a queen-sized bed, typically an 8’x10’ rug will be the best fit. If the room is larger, you may need to size-up to a 9’x12’.  In a king-sized bedroom, typically a 9’x12’ will work -- but you may need to customize a rug for a larger size. Be sure to allow space between the face of your nightstand and the rug - 12" or more.

Don't forget about the kitchen when you are selecting rugs! A vintage runner in your kitchen is key. Not only is it functional, for a little softness under your feet, but with all the hard surfaces in your kitchen, it adds a much needed textile layer to the space.

Kitchen rugs are a great way to expand on your design theme without taking up space.

Besides the size of rug, layering multiple rugs is another way to create depth in a room. Creating these layers can bring a delicious contrast of textures; not to mention a healthy dash of sophistication. Select a larger, low profile jute or sisal for the base, and for the top, create interest with a vintage or tribal pattern.

You don’t have to remodel to get a different feel, change rugs every season for a change.
