YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE

Lighting totally makes the space… it’s actually one of my favorite furnishings to select for a home because of how impactful it is. I explain to my clients that it’s like adding jewelry to an outfit. What was just a grey T-shirt and white jeans instantly has personality and flair. And yet, light is also essentially the first element of design; without it, there is no color, form, or texture.

Look how the decorative lighting elevates the room in this home we recently completed.

This sconce is not only functional because it highlights the art. It also adds character, depth, and interest to the fireplace wall. The mixed metals help tie together various finishes in the room.

The oversized chandelier creates drama and draws attention to this light filled breakfast nook. The sculptural feel of the fixture is spectacular.

In the foyer we placed monochromatic sconces flanking the artwork and a semi-flush mount ceiling fixture. Even with an 8’ ceiling height, as in this foyer, you can still find unique pendants that fit your height requirements. As a rule of thumb, when walking under a fixture, allow for a minimum of 84” clearance.

This could have been a boring, dead-end’ hallway, but adding the sconce and art creates a moment. This pretty little sconce draws your eye down the hall. Back in my hotel design days I had a boss that would say, in his Southern Texas accent, “It just gives a little eye-level sparkle.”

These little cuties are adorable. So adorable that I have them in my powder room, too. Unexpected lighting gives a small space a big impact.

And there you have it! Hopefully you feel inspired to add a little sparkle to your own home. Do you have any lighting tips of your own? I’d love to hear them in the comments below.
